First opened in February of 1925, the Grand Theater was once a bustling center of activity, but its doors have been closed to the public for nearly forty years. Lancaster Grand Theater, Inc., is committed to the revitalization of the Grand Theater to its once proud splendor. To this end, the non-profit Lancaster Grand Theater, Inc., has begun acquiring properties in the northwest quadrant of the Town Square. The restored Grand will provide a venue for both Garrard County and central Kentucky to enjoy family-oriented entertainment, as well as provide a meeting place for conferences and speaking engagements. The economic and social benefits of this ambitious venture are immeasurable, giving Garrard County and its guests a reason to "come back to the square."
Steeped in history, Garrard County is home to three of Kentucky's governors, Governor Robert Letcher, Governor William Owsley, and Governor William O. Bradley. Governor William Owsley's home, Pleasant Retreat, has been restored and is open to the public as a museum illustrating the life and times of Governor Owsley. Among its furnishings is magnificent early nineteenth century French scenic wall paper. In addition, delectable lunches and dinners may be scheduled for groups in the reconstructed carriage
house. The Carriage House may also be rented for private affairs. Historic Garrard County is the home of three Kentucky Governors, numerous statesmen, and temeperance advocate Carrie Nation as well as the Kennedy Plantation, the inspiration for Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Among the nearly one hundred sites on the National Register of Historic Places is Old Paint Lick Presbyterian Church, Among the attractions of Garrard County are numerous antique stores. For those who are seeking a bargain, Lancaster holds a city-wide yard sale in conjunction with the U.S. 127 Yard Sale. Whether your choice is skiing, fishing, or boating, Garrard County offers a wealth of water related recreational opportunities. Garrard County also boasts two scenic nature preserves along the Kentucky River. Covered picnic facilities, walking and riding trails are available at Logan Hubble Park. Garrard County Recreational Park offers two new tennis courts and two new baseball fields, a concession stand, and an expanded picnic area. In addition, Kentucky is investigating possibilities for locating its newest state park on Herrington Lake. Pete Dye's Kentucky golf masterpiece, Peninsula Golf Resort is among the best in Kentucky.
